Fall 2024 Learning Labs & Working Labs
Overview
Runs OCT 14 - DEC 18
We’re excited to introduce a new approach to our workshops, making them more flexible and accessible! Designed specifically for black and brown youth aged 12-19, our Learning Labs and Working Labs are now split into smaller, focused sessions, each lasting 3 weeks. This structure ensures that students can engage without feeling overwhelmed. Join us in-person or virtually to gain hands-on experience in Game Development or Music Production, and empower yourself with the skills needed for future success.
Learn the following skills
These skills learned in our Labs prepare students to enter the workforce, along with maintaining their careers with the technical abilities and real-world experience that employers in software development and audio engineering are looking for. We begin them as a beginner teaching them the fundamentals and build them from there upon each return to a workshop.
- Programming & Software Development: Master coding fundamentals, object-oriented programming, and develop custom game engines.
- Graphic Design & 2D/3D Modeling: Build and optimize 2D/3D models for games.
- Project Management & Agile Methodology: Lead and collaborate in Scrum teams, manage full game development life cycles.
- Version Control with Git: Gain proficiency in Git for collaboration and version control.
- Web Development & JavaScript: Create browser-based games using modern web technologies.
- Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) & Audio Engineering: Learn DAW basics, advanced mixing, mastering, and sound synthesis.
- Music Theory & Composition: Develop complex chord progressions, melodies, and full music projects.
- Sampling & Beat Production: Enhance skills in sampling, beat-making, and music arrangement.
- Creative Innovation & Sound Design: Foster creativity in music production, develop a unique signature sound.
- Project Execution: Plan, execute, and release complete albums, leveraging knowledge of acoustics and sound design.
Alignment with Industry Roles:
- Software Developer: Programming, software development, project management, version control, and web development are key skills.
- Audio Engineer: Mastering, mixing, DAW proficiency, sound design, and project execution are essential competencies.
Well, when I first did the program itself, I had some inkling that I wanted to do coding or something similar. I think what made it easy compared to classes or even lessons that I took prior to that was that it was framed around completing something that was cool and interesting to make.
Kel - Former Student/Now Engineer
I got introduced to a lot of different things, a lot of different ways I can create music using loops and chords. And I also learned chord progressions, how to make my own beats. I do see some sort of future with music, with hobby. I can be like an elementary school music teacher.

More Information
We believe in making our programs accessible to all students. If cost is a barrier, we encourage you to apply for our scholarship program. Scholarships are available to help cover the cost of enrollment in either or both labs.
Here’s an outline of what’s needed for both in-person and virtual Labs:
General Requirements:
- All students need their own email address separate from their parents.
Virtual Learning Labs:
- Game Development: Requires a Windows machine and a decent internet connection for smooth operation.
- Music Production: Requires a modern web browser with a stable internet connection.
In-Person Learning Labs:
- Equipment: All necessary equipment will be provided on-site, so students do not need to bring their own devices.
Having their own email prepares students for using professional online platforms like GitHub and BandLab, which are integral to our Labs. These labs are designed to equip students with the skills and habits that companies value, such as checking emails regularly and maintaining a responsible mindset. By starting with their own email, students begin developing the discipline needed to succeed in the workforce and impress secondary entities like colleges and employers. It’s a crucial step in setting them up for future success.
Upon completing our labs, students will leave with tangible products like a fully developed video game or a produced music album. They will also receive a certificate of graduation, advancing them to the next level of learning. Additionally, students will gain valuable experience to include on their resumes, with assistance provided for resume creation or maintenance. Their products will be released to the public, giving them real-world experience in launching their work.
Beyond the technical skills, students will gain confidence in seeing their ideas come to life, developed by their own hands. The team-based environment in our Working Labs fosters essential soft skills and communication abilities. Finally, students will have the opportunity to showcase their work in a release party, where the magnitude of their efforts is celebrated by peers, teachers, and the public.
Music products created by students will be released on major platforms such as Soundcloud, BandLab, Spotify, Apple Music, iTunes, and more. Game products will be published on platforms like GitHub, GameJolt, and Itch.io. These releases provide students with public links they can share with friends, family, and secondary entities like colleges or potential employers, showcasing their work and the skills they’ve developed.
Each Lab is 3 weeks long, consisting of a total of 20 hours. This timeframe is designed to provide an immersive and focused learning experience while ensuring that students can engage deeply without feeling overwhelmed.
